Wheels for Peru! Our new partner, Centro de Investigación, Educación y Desarrollo (CIDE) is a development organization, focusing on resolving problems in Peru’s rural areas, with emphasis on sustainable rural human development. With the empowerment and synergy of local actors as the key, CIDE takes account of local competitive forces, and promotes technical assistance and training.
Transportation is very difficult. Only a few minibuses (combis) are available in the Ahuac district, and Nahuinpuquio villagers are left off 5 km from home. Sources of fresh water are about 1 to 3 km from home. The community suffers from isolation. CIDE has published two books on the role of women in the management of water systems in the high plateaus. Some bikes will be used to develop a cycle touring project. Additionally, CIDE has developed an interesting project to promote heritage sites by restoring old buildings and redecorating them with frescoes and decorative motifs referencing local culture. The result is attractive, attracts tourists and generates new income for local economies. A little imagination can create a miracle! | |
