BIKES AND BAMBOO  | This year our logistics expert was able to visit our partner – the Union Nacional de Arquitectos y Ingenieros de la Construccion de Cuba (UNAICC). He returned with very positive feedback on the impact of our bike project in Cuba, where the needs are considerable.
Through a partnership with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Quebec bicycles arriving in Cuba are given without charge to farm workers involved in the Bamboo-Biomass project. As their daily transportation needs are roughly 13 km per day, when the market and childcare are on the way to work, these bikes completely reshape the quality of their daily lives.
| The Swiss Agency, which assesses the impact of social development on its investments, has confirmed the exceptional profitability of the bike project and has already committed its support until 2015! The Bamboo Biomass Project has already made possible planting of 202 hectares of different bamboo species. As an especially ecological and economical building material, this plant’s high rate of growth and its sustainability add special value. This project takes place in several parts of Cuba in 26 established workshops. Two containers are already planned for 2009, for communities affected by hurricanes this year. |
